All You Need to Know about Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure involving correction of the shape and deformity of the eyelids to achieve an enhanced and youthful look of eyelids. Eyelid surgery is performed to treat excess, dropped skin on the upper eyelids, puffy/ droopy lower and upper eyelids, and wrinkles around the eyelids. This surgery is suitable for people who have droopy eyelids, eyebags and wrinkly eyelids.
How is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Performed?
Length of an eyelid surgery: It usually takes around 1 to 3 hours. The length of an eyelid depends on the amount of the area treated (upper or lower eyelid or both) and the condition of the eyelids.
Inpatient or Outpatient: Usually, patients stay in the hospital.
Anesthesia: It is usually performed under general anesthesia.
Incisions: There are different techniques that can be used for surgery. Your MCAN Health surgeon will choose the most suitable one for you by considering your condition and expectation from your surgery.
For upper eyelids, smaller and easy-to-hide incisions can be made through the natural lines of your eyelids. For lower eyelids, the incisions can be made below the lashes. MCAN Health surgeons make very small and easy-to-hide incisions that will not be visible after the surgery. For lower eyelids, there is another method for incision, called transconjunctival incision, which can be made inside of the lower eyelid. This technique removes the excess fat but not the skin.
Removing the excess skin and fat: After the incisions are made, the excess fat and skin will be removed from the eyelids. MCAN Health surgeons can use a resurfacing laser technique additionally to remove and reduce wrinkles and to make external skin firmer.
