Liposuction has become the star of 2018 among other plastic surgeries, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, with its 5% increase compared to the previous year. Although the champion of 2018 is breast enlargement, liposuction seems to be the most applied plastic surgery of 2019 with the upcoming techniques such as Vaser Liposuction and Liposculpture.
As we are getting a lot of questions from our patients about liposuction, we would like to answer some of them with our plastic surgeon Dr Muzaffer Durmuş.
Let’s start to explain what liposuction is in a nutshell:
Liposuction is originally a body shaping technique. The aim of the liposuction is to remove the excess/unwanted fat formation in the subcutaneous area (the subcutaneous area is between the skin and the muscles). By removing the fat from the focused area, liposuction provides a chance to reshape your body.
Liposuction is also one of the most applied treatments among celebrities from all around the world.
You can have liposuction for your local fats or if you have a fat distribution problem. Some people need their stubborn fat to be removed while some people want to tone up their muscles and bodies to a perfect fit look.
Let’s answer your questions to learn more about liposuction:
Question 1: How Does Liposuction Work?
Traditional liposuction is mostly preferred method by the surgeons. As we mentioned earlier, it targets the fat cells in the subcutaneous area. Here you can see what exactly happens:
To reach the fat cells, the surgeon makes a very small incision. Then, a blunt cannula, connected to an aspirator, is used to suck the fat cells out. The blunt cannula has small holes on it where the fat cells will be sucked through.
Question 2: Where does the fat go during liposuction?
Actually, the whole liposuction system can be seen as a vacuum cleaner that is adapted for the human body.
The blunt cannula is also attached to a liposuction canister where the fat will be reserved. The removed fat is very valuable for you as it can be used in operations that require fat injection. The fat can be injected into the buttocks for a Brazilian Butt Lift, into the face as a filler material for facial rejuvenation or into the breasts as an alternative breast augmentation method.
Question 3: When Will I See The Results? Are Liposuction Results Immediate?
You will feel the difference just after the surgery but not the whole results. In the first week, you will have swelling around the areas where liposuction is applied. The swelling will gradually disappear but this progress varies from person to person. It is observed that %90 of the patients after liposuction can see the final results in one to three months. However, the final result cannot be observed less than 6 months.
Question 4: Will Liposuction Leave Scars?
Shortly, the answer is no but keep reading to get into details about scars.
Scars are the natural response of your body towards any kind of wound. It is a crucial process for healthy healing. The shape and intensity of scarring also vary from person to person. Fortunately, the incisions made during liposuction are very tiny. Also, an experienced and talented surgeon knows how to minimize the scars.
You should be really careful before deciding the provider and the surgeon for your liposuction. Although it is a safe operation, you should never risk anything when it comes to medical operations. Do not forget to check governmental accreditations before deciding your provider.
Question 5: Can Liposuction Remove Visceral Fat?
There are two types of fat cells in our body: Visceral Fat and Subcutaneous Fat.
Here you can have a clear idea:
Liposuction only focuses on subcutaneous fat which covers the area beneath the skin. As you know, our bodies are divided into layers. After the subcutaneous fat comes to the abdominal muscles where liposuction cannula is not supposed to reach. As visceral fat cells are positioned under the abdominal muscles, liposuction has no effect on this area.
We would like to emphasize again that liposuction is not a weight loss operation but a body shaping which greatly helps you remove your subcutaneous fat. In order to lose your visceral fat, exercise and a balanced diet are the best ways.
Question 6: Can Liposuction Help With Cellulite?
It depends on the intensity of help that you are looking for. Cellulite is a problem with skin texture. Liposuction is not a method to fix the skin texture but it can stretch the skin by removing the fat beneath. Removing the cellulite with liposuction is not possible, but liposuction may help to reduce cellulite as it affects the fats beneath the skin.
Question 7: How long is Liposuction Recovery?
Liposuction is an inpatient operation and it requires a hospital stay. However, in one and small area liposuction operations hospital stay may not be necessary. The doctor will give you a special liposuction garment for the best recovery and result and it should be worn for 6 weeks. Depending on the individual, in 3-5 days, you can go back to your work or daily routines however you should be careful about intense physical activities for six weeks. Only after three weeks, you can go for light exercises. For the first ten days, you need to take care of yourself as you will have soreness and swelling.
You should drink at least 2 lt. of water each day and walking is very good for the recovery period.
Compared to other plastic surgeries, liposuction has the easiest recovery period as it requires minimal incisions.
Question 8: Is Vaser Liposuction Better Than Traditional Liposuction? How About Laser Liposuction?
We have already explained the traditional liposuction procedure.
In Vaser (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy Resonance) Liposuction, instead of the traditional liposuction cannula, sound waves are used to extract the fat cells. The ultrasound technology behind Vaser Liposuction lets the surgeon have a more selective extraction which will lead to less swelling and bruising after the operation.
Laser liposuction, also known as SmartLipo, uses the heat of laser light to extract the fat cells. The biggest advantage of Laser Liposuction is that it helps with skin tightening. It also provides a shorter recovery time than others.
As every individual may need personal treatment, it is best to talk to your surgeon about which type of liposuction is the best for you!
