Crown (Vertex)
The crown (vertex) is the area at the highest point of the scalp toward the back, typically where the hair naturally parts or forms a whorl. Its anatomy differs slightly from the frontal hairline and temples: hairs at the crown may be finer and lie in a circular growth pattern, which can make thinning here more noticeable as density decreases.
The crown (vertex) is a common site for androgenetic (pattern) hair loss in both men and women, and changes here are often used to stage progression when assessing hair loss. Because of its shape and the direction of hair growth, treatment planning for the crown may differ from other scalp zones and can include medical therapies to slow thinning and surgical or procedural options to restore density, taking into account donor availability and the pattern of hair loss.
