Dense Packing
Dense packing refers to a hair transplantation approach in which follicular unit grafts are planted at a higher density than usual within a given area of the scalp to improve the appearance of fullness. Surgeons achieve dense packing by creating closely spaced recipient sites and placing grafts with precise angulation and depth so the hair grows in a natural pattern; this technique is most commonly used in areas where creating the appearance of thicker hair is a priority, such as the hairline or crown.
While dense packing can produce a fuller look with fewer sessions, it also increases demands on the scalp’s blood supply and on the available donor hair, so careful assessment is essential. Patients should be informed about the potential trade-offs, including a slightly higher risk of temporary graft shock, the need for conservative planning in areas with limited donor supply, and realistic expectations about achievable density and long-term maintenance.
