DUPA (Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia)
DUPA (Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia) is a pattern of diffuse hair thinning in which hair density decreases uniformly across the scalp, including the traditional donor regions at the back and sides of the head. It is distinguished from patterned forms of hair loss by the lack of a clear recession line and by widespread miniaturization, and diagnosis typically relies on clinical examination, trichoscopy and sometimes scalp biopsy to evaluate follicle health.
Causes of DUPA can include genetic predisposition, hormonal influences and systemic or inflammatory factors, and patients often report increased shedding and overall loss of volume rather than isolated bald spots. Management involves identifying and treating any underlying triggers, using medical therapies when appropriate, and carefully assessing the stability of the donor area before considering surgical interventions.
