Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL)
Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) is a genetically influenced condition characterized by gradual, diffuse thinning over the crown and mid-scalp with preservation of the frontal hairline in many women. It results from progressive miniaturization of hair follicles driven by a combination of hereditary factors and hormonal influences; presentation and severity vary, and it is distinct from sudden shedding conditions or patchy autoimmune hair loss.
Evaluation typically includes a medical history, scalp examination and may use trichoscopy or basic laboratory tests to rule out contributing factors such as iron deficiency or thyroid disease. Management is individualized and can include topical therapies like minoxidil, hormonal or antiandrogen medications where appropriate, supportive options such as low-level laser treatment, and in select cases surgical reconstruction (hair transplant); earlier diagnosis and tailored therapy generally give better outcomes.
