Graft Dislodgement

Graft Dislodgement

Graft dislodgement is the accidental displacement or loss of one or more transplanted hair grafts during the early postoperative period, most commonly within the first one to two weeks after a hair transplant. Because grafts are not yet fully anchored into the scalp during this time, mechanical forces such as rubbing, scratching, forceful washing, sleeping pressure, or trauma — and less commonly infection or hematoma — can cause grafts to dislodge.

Prevention relies on careful surgical technique and strict adherence to post-operative care: gentle handling of the scalp, correct sleep positioning, avoiding touching or vigorous activity, and following instructions for washing and wound care can greatly reduce the risk of graft dislodgement. If you suspect graft dislodgement, contact your surgeon or healthcare provider for assessment; a small number of lost grafts may not alter the final outcome, but larger losses can affect results and may require revision or additional management.
