Graft Follicular Unit

Graft (Follicular Unit)

A graft (follicular unit) is a small, naturally occurring bundle of one to four hair follicles that emerge together from the scalp and share associated structures such as sebaceous glands and connective tissue. These groupings are the basic anatomical units of scalp hair and are what surgeons and clinicians use when describing, harvesting, and implanting hair during restoration procedures.

In hair transplantation the number and quality of grafts (follicular units) determine coverage and apparent density; clinicians commonly report both graft count and total follicle count to explain expected results. Proper handling, placement, and matching of grafts to the recipient area influence graft survival and the natural appearance of regrown hair, so understanding the distinction between single follicles and follicular units can help patients follow treatment planning and outcomes.
