Occipital Area

Occipital Area

The occipital area is the lower back portion of the scalp that overlies the occipital bone and extends upward from the hairline at the nape of the neck. This region typically has hair follicles that are more resistant to androgen-driven thinning, and its underlying anatomy — including skin thickness, muscle, and blood supply — influences healing, sensation, and scar formation.

In clinical practice the occipital area is frequently evaluated as a donor zone for hair restoration and other scalp procedures because of its relative hair stability and density. Surgeons and clinicians assess factors such as donor density, hair caliber, skin laxity, prior scarring, and local vascular and nerve anatomy when planning graft harvesting (FUE or FUT), local anesthesia, or adjunctive procedures like scalp micropigmentation to minimize complications and optimize outcomes.
