Pitting
Pitting describes tiny, often shallow depressions on the surface of the nail plate and, less commonly, irregularities of the scalp surface. In the context of hair and scalp health, nail pitting is a visible sign that can point to underlying inflammatory or autoimmune conditions—most commonly alopecia areata and psoriasis—that may also affect hair growth.
Assessment usually involves a clinical exam and medical history to identify associated skin or systemic disease; additional tests such as dermoscopy, blood tests, or referral to a dermatologist may be recommended. Management focuses on diagnosing and treating the underlying condition to prevent progression, and when scarring or permanent hair loss is a concern, discussion of hair restoration or scalp rehabilitation options may follow once inflammation is controlled.
