Otoplasty

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct the shape, position, or proportion of the ears. It commonly addresses prominent ears, congenital deformities, or asymmetry by reshaping cartilage and securing the ear closer to the head, with incisions typically placed behind the ear to keep scars discreet; the operation can be performed in children and adults to create a more balanced facial appearance.

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia for younger patients, and recovery involves temporary swelling, bruising, and a protective dressing or headband for the first week. Potential complications include bleeding, infection, scarring, hematoma, or persistent asymmetry, and although rare revision surgery may be needed, outcomes are generally long-lasting when the procedure is tailored to the individual’s anatomy and expectations.
