Tear Trough

Tear Trough

The tear trough is the anatomical groove between the lower eyelid and the cheek that can become more pronounced with age, facial volume loss, thinning skin, or genetic tendency. It typically appears as hollowness or a shadowed band under the eye and may contribute to the look of dark circles and a fatigued appearance even in well-rested individuals.

Management focuses on restoring a smooth contour and may include hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to replace lost volume, autologous fat grafting for longer-term correction, or surgical lower eyelid procedures when excess skin or fat herniation is present. Each option has possible side effects—such as bruising, swelling, irregularity, or filler-related complications like the Tyndall effect—and benefits and risks should be evaluated with a qualified specialist to choose the optimal approach for the individual.
