Hair Transplant Guide

After experiencing hair loss, hair transplant candidates usually do their own research. They use the internet as their research source where there are a lot of misleading information or acquaintances around which may be insufficient in terms of correct information. Although the best way is to see a surgeon, candidates want to have a rough idea about the procedure.

That’s why MCAN Health presents you the following hair transplant guide before you decide on your own. Throughout this guide, the frequently asked questions about hair transplant in Turkey are answered.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss is a natural reaction of the human body. Regardless of the gender and age, everyone loses hair. The density of the hair loss determines if it is natural or problematic. The most clear signal for a problematic hair loss is thinning, receding or balding parts observed on the scalp.

The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. It is seen in both women and men, but mostly in men. The ratio is 40% female hair loss to 60% male hair loss. There are various factors for hair loss. That’s why it is not always easy to find the exact cause.

To find the best treatment for hair loss, the cause of hair loss should be known at first. There are various possible causes such as:

Genetical (Hereditary): Genetic heritage is observed as the most common cause for hair loss. As genes are carrying information regarding the structure of the body, it is quite possible for hair loss to be transmitted from generation to generation.

Medical Conditions: Health conditions can also cause hair loss. Problems in thyroid, iron deficiency anaemia, secondary syphilis and various diseases may also have an effect.

Hormones: The hormonal balance of the body may also lead to hair loss. It may be a natural hormonal change or it may be triggered by the use of medication.

Stress: Stress is also a plausible factor for hair loss. During periods of life with high stress levels, hair loss is an expected reaction.

Injury: Hair loss can be caused by a trauma like damage, scarring or burn on the scalp.

Diet: Certain diet preferences, such as a low protein diet or a diet based on serious calorie limitation, may lead to hair loss as a result of the insufficient nutrition needed for a healthy hair.

What Causes Hair Loss in Men?

Men's Hair Loss Type

More than half of men in their 50s, or older, experience hair loss in one way or another. By the age of 70, every 4 men out of 5 show signs of hair loss.

There are various reasons for hair loss in men.

The most common reason is genetics. It is called the male pattern baldness, also called androgenetic alopecia. In this case, if you have close relatives with balding or receding hair, you may have it, too.

The biological reason behind male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is a hormone named Dihydrotestosterone, shortly DHT. Every day a considerable number of biochemical reactions are happening in our body.

What is DHT?

DHT can be simply defined as a byproduct of the male hormone testosterone. When a particular enzyme, namely 5α-Reductase enzyme, gets into a reaction with the testosterone hormone, it is converted to Dihydrotestosterone. If the body produces extensive amount of DHT, then hair loss is experienced.

The effect of Dihydrotestosterone on male pattern baldness is proven by several scientific researches. Published in 2014, the conclusion of a research paper on DHT and androgenetic alopecia clearly states: “Dihydrotestosterone is the most influential androgen and seems to play a very important role in the pathogenesis of androgenetic alopecia.”

Fortunately, some parts of the hair are completely resistant to the effects of DHT. Thanks to the characteristics of such hair, hair transplant is a possible and permanent solution for hair loss.

Other Factors Causing Hair Loss

Medical issues can also cause hair loss in men. Medical conditions such as thyroid problems, diets low in protein and iron, and anaemia may cause hair loss and thinning of the hairline.

Hair loss in men can also be caused by prescribed drugs for different illnesses and conditions. These can be cancer, arthritis, depression, high blood pressure, or heart-related problems.

Excessive stress in men also causes hair loss. Besides, infections by ringworms etc. on the scalp are also factors. Men need to groom properly. Wearing ponytails, and braids can cause hair loss temporarily if they tighten the hair next to the scalp area. This is called traction alopecia.

Trichotillomania, the hair-pulling disorder, is also a hair loss cause in men.

But, wearing hats, or caps, swimming in chlorinated, or saltwater, applying sunscreen, or hair dryers do not cause permanent hair loss in men.

What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

Women's Hair Loss Type

The most common reason for hair loss in women is also the same with men: female pattern baldness, also called the male pattern baldness in men. It can be caused by genetics. The biochemical mechanics works the same as men. As the female body also contains testosterone, the production of DHT is still possible and it may lead to hair loss in a standard pattern.Like men, women are affected by similar conditions with some exceptions. But more women have underlying hair loss causes than men.In genetic cases, women’s hair is likely to be more diffused. Hair loss in women has less chance to appear on the crown and frontal hairline.Usually, women experience hair loss gradually. Some women may see the start of hair loss at the early 20s. But, the pace is slower. It takes years to be visible to others’ eyes. Many women in their 30s can experience a usual thinning. It is a physiological issue. Underlying causes of hair loss in women include curable conditions.Treatable conditions such as anaemia, thyroid disease, and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) can cause hair loss in women, too. Pregnancy and hair loss in women have correlation as well. During pregnancy, some women report thickening in hair. It is due to hormonal changes. After the delivery, there may be temporary hair loss in women. As menopause is a hormonal change, too, women can have hair loss. However, it is assumed that menopause and hair loss is not directly related but may happen at the same time.Increased stress, intense illnesses, operations, excessive weight loss in a short period, taking too much Vitamin A can also cause hair loss in women. But, rumours like long hair pulling on the roots, or hats choking off follicles are more likely urban legends. Also, shampooing does not cause hair loss. It only removes hair that is about to fall off in any case. Hair colouring processes and chemicals are not direct causes of hair loss in women, either.

How to Stop Hair Loss?

Stopping hair loss is an important procedure. First, the cause of hair loss should be understood. To understand, one should observe how much and for how long the hair loss is being experienced. Medical conditions, diet and medication are the primary factors to check. Hair loss may stop if such factors disappear.

If hair loss is nevertheless going on, then the possible ways to stop can be searched. It is detailed, and secondhand advice may not work for everyone. There are several medication with chemical and organic ingredients.

Minoxidil and Finasteride are the most known medication options. While they do stop hair loss in some cases, they are not treating the problem permanently but only ceases the symptoms as long as used regularly. Upon quitting the medication, the hair loss is experienced again. They also causes a number of unfavorable side effects.

The only permanent way to stop hair loss is hair transplantation. It is by far the most effective solution to hair loss. Unlike other methods:

  • It is a medical operation.
  • No component alien to the body is used.
  • Cosmetically, it is a superior solution as the distribution of hair is controlled and designed.
  • As long as performed correctly, the transplanted hair never falls again.

What is Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant is the surgical treatment by which naturally growing hair is restored. Hair restoration is done on thinning, balding, or receding areas on the head of the patient.

It is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. Basically, hair from the donor area of the scalp are transplanted to the balding areas.

The donor area used for hair transplant is the area at the back of the head, covering the area between the ears. The recipient area is where there is balding, or recessing, that is, the area with the thinning hair.
Hair transplant is a possible and perfectly working method thanks to the peculiar characteristic of the hair growing on the donor area. As it is stated in 1.2.1 Section, DHT is responsible for the hair loss. The hair on the donor area is immune to the effects of DHT. It means that the hair on the donor area never falls.

Hair restoration is based on this advantageous characteristic. The hair loss resistant hair follicles are extracted from the donor area and implanted into the balding parts of the recipient area.

Therefore, hair transplant is in a sense hair redistribution. It is a replacement, substituting one hair follicle from a certain part of the scalp into the other.

It works the same way in beard transplantation as well. The donor area can be used to enhance a poorly grown beard or moustache.

Also, hair transplant offers treatment for the loss of eyelashes, eyebrowsfacial hair due to trauma, or scarring. The reasons for hair loss on the scalp or body can be natural as well as traumatic. Traumas are the results of scarring or burning.

It should be also noted that in some cases in which the donor area on the scalp does not include sufficient hair, the body hair can also be used as donor follicles.

Which Factors Are Considered to Determine a Hair Transplant Treatment Plan?

The treatment plan is the most crucial part of a hair transplant operation. As the treatment plan is the basis of the whole operation, several factors should be considered very carefully.

As these factors vary in each individual, it is also very important to prepare personalised hair transplant treatment plan for each patient. A good hair transplant is completely related to a good treatment plan.

The preparation of a correct treatment plan for hair transplant depends on several factors:

  1. Age Consideration
  2. Hair Type
  3. Speed of Hair Loss
  4. Donor Area Capacity
  5. Flexibility of Scalp
  6. Hamilton-Norwood Scale Level

Age Consideration

Although there is no age limit to hair transplant procedure, it is an important factor in determining the candidate’s options.

It is usually for the best to have hair transplant surgery after the hair loss completely stops. A hair transplant surgeon will give the best advice after an online or face to face consultation.

Candidates who are in their late teens, or early twenties may want to seek surgical options. However, it is not entirely possible to anticipate the density of balding for these people. They need to consult with a surgeon in the first place. It is crucially important to have a correct evaluation of the hair loss.

To have a hair transplant, one needs to wait for hair loss to stop completely. While the transplanted hair never falls out, the remaining (not transplanted) hair may keep falling. The result of such a situation may be a scalp with small bald patches and it is not a preferable look for anyone.

Hair Type

Your hair type is an important factor to prepare a correct treatment plan and get the best hair restoration that looks natural. For example, if your hair is thick, it is possible that it will result in more coverage. Curly and wavy hair also helps in this direction.

Thickness of the hair determines the treatment plan. The hair transplant surgeon distributes the hair extracted from the donor area by primarily considering the hair type.

A hair type that is too thin has its own limitations. Afro hair type is also another factor as it is curly and very thick. Afro hair transplant can be performed very successfully but in some cases the hair follicles may be too thick to be extracted that a hair transplant cannot be an option.

Speed of Hair Loss

The speed of the hair loss is a very important information that helps determine the treatment plan for hair transplant.

As it is mentioned before, the hair transplant candidate must have a hair loss that is not active anymore. If a hair transplant operation is performed on a patient with active hair loss, the result will change in future as a result of the on-going hair loss process.

As the transplanted hair is immune to DHT (a hormone that is responsible for hair loss), they will never fall again. But the remaining hair will fall and random bald patches will cover the scalp with a very unpleasant look.

A correct evaluation of the speed of hair loss is one of the important criteria for the best hair transplant results.

Donor Area Capacity

Donor area is a factor that is as crucial as the recipient area. Donor area contains the only hair type that is suitable to be used for hair transplant due to their immunity to DHT.

However, the donor area has its own limits. As hair transplantation is a method of hair replacement, it is not appropriate to extract as many grafts as needed without any concern. Once the hair follicle is extracted from the donor area, it will not grow back in its original position. It will simply be replaced to the recipient area to cover the baldness.

So, if too many grafts are taken from the donor area, then the result will look unpleasant as the donor area will have a receding or balding look.

An experienced hair transplant surgeon should take into account the capacity of donor area while preparing the treatment plan. The doctor should also extract the hair from the donor area in such a way that the traces of the extracted hair should be covered by the remaining hair on the donor area.

Flexibility of the Scalp

The flexibility of the scalp is determined by the skin type covering the head. For some the skin may be tight while some it may be loose.

Ideally, a loose skin that has a certain flexibility is suitable for hair transplant. The reason behind this fact is very simple.

When the skin gets tighter, it also gets harder to implant the graft into the opened channel. Because a tighter skin makes it harder to open channels properly. The channel may only let thin grafts to be transplanted but this is also not desirable as thin grafts will end up with weak hair growth.

The hair transplant surgeon should consider the flexibility of the scalp and the thickness of hair before preparing the treatment plan for natural-looking results and good coverage.

Hamilton-Norwood Scale Level

Hamilton Norwood Scale is a particular code that classifies male pattern baldness. It was first introduced by Dr. James Hamilton during 1950s and later developed by O’Tar Norwood in the 1970s.

Hamilton Norwood Scale is a widely accepted tool for evaluating the level of baldness in men. It shows how severe the hair loss is at the moment by dividing hair loss into certain stages.

There are different patterns for hair loss in men. While some men lose hair from their temples, others suffer from hair loss at the back of their head (vertex). And, some men can have receding hairline and hair loss at the back.

There are 7 stages of hair loss according to Hamilton Norwood Scale. To have detailed information about each stage, you can visit our Hamilton Norwood Scale page.

Hair Transplant Methods and Techniques

How is a Hair Transplant Performed?

hair transplant procedure

The hair transplant procedure is performed by medical teams led by hair transplant surgeons. The procedure varies for different techniques used in your treatment.

There are various hair transplant techniques and methods:

  1. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
  2. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
  3. Sapphire FUE with Sapphire Blades
  4. Unshaven Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) with Choi Pen

There are 5 particular stages followed in most of the hair transplant operations:

Pre-operative Stage

This stage starts with face to face consultation with the hair transplant surgeon. Although the incident of hair loss and its restoration are perfectly standardized, each patient should be seen as a unique case and a personalised treatment plan should be prepared.

During the face to face consultation, the hair transplant surgeon closely observes and evaluates the stage and density of the hair loss considering the patient’s unique characteristics. The surgeon perceives the expectations of the patient and comes up with a treatment plan to meet the expectations in the best and most medically appropriate way.

After the treatment plan is prepared, a number of medical tests are performed to ensure the safety of hair transplant operation.

Shaving and Anaesthesia Stage

After the medical check, the surgeon’s medical team firstly shave the back of the scalp. Then, the scalp is completely sedated by local anaesthesia.

There are various methods of anaesthesia.

The standard local anaesthesia is done by injecting sedative chemicals into the scalp with a tiny needle. Injection is the last sensation felt on the scalp and it is described as a quite tolerable pain.

The Needle-Free Anaesthesia is also an option for patients who do not prefer needles. A special pen-like tool is used in this method. The pen is able to infiltrate the sedative into the skin by high pressured air. In this method, not even a little pain is felt or reported.

Follicular Unit Extraction Stage

After the scalp is all numb, the hair transplant surgeon starts to operation by extracting hair follicles from the donor area one by one. The extracted grafts are grouped based on how many hairs they contain inside. The ones with the higher number of hair are used on the frontal part to create a good density.

After the Follicular Unit Extraction stage, the process on the donor area completely ends. The existing hair on the donor area eventually covers the small dots during the healing period. The traces of extraction on the donor area are cosmetically hidden as the hair grows.

Channel Opening Stage

In this stage, the process advances into the recipient area. The surgeon sterilizes the recipient area after preparing the grafts.

By using steel blades, the surgeon and medical team open tiny channels with slits by making minimal incisions on the recipient area.

Hair Transplantation Stage

This is the last stage in which hair follicles are transplanted into the recipient area. Each graft is then carefully placed in each tiny channel. Here, the medical team can assist the surgeon.

Make sure your hair transplant is performed by medical surgeons with MD degree if you are planning to get a hair transplant in Turkey.

What is a Graft?

Your hair naturally grows in bundles. These bundles are called follicular unit grafts. During a hair transplant, these grafts are handled strategically to provide you with the most desired outcome.

Although the number of grafts per follicle changes from individual to individual, each follicle on average has 2.5 hairs. It means that 4 hair grafts in average have 10 hairs. However, varying from person to person, a graft can contain up to 5 hairs based on the thickness of hair.

The number of grafts for your own hair transplant procedure is strategically determined by the surgeon and medical team. There are also graft calculators with which you can have a rough idea on the number of your grafts before actually seeing a surgeon for the exact number.

How Many Grafts Do You Need?

The number of grafts needed for hair transplant varies from person to person. The solution is a combination of the size of the balding part, the capacity of the donor area, the thickness and type of hair and patient’s expectations.

Without a proper consultation with an experienced hair transplant surgeon, it is not possible to give an exact number. However, there are graft calculators that can give you an approximate number about how many grafts are needed to cover your receding parts.

Here you can use MCAN Health’s Graft Calculator to have an idea.

hair graft calculator guide 1

The graft calculator is developed by MCAN Health with the close supervision and participation of the reputable hair transplant surgeons in Turkey. The graft calculator is checked and approved by several hair transplant surgeons and it is accepted as a reliable source to give an approximate idea about the grafts needed for hair transplant.

What are the Different Techniques Used for a Hair Transplant?

There are different techniques used for hair transplant. Your technique is chosen to address your individual needs after a surgeon’s advice.

What are these hair transplant techniques?

In a hair transplant treatment, there are two different methodological options for graft extraction. They are Strip Harvesting Method (used in Follicular Unit Transplant) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

The strip harvesting method leaves a scar. That is why Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is nowadays preferred over FUT for better results and no scars whatsoever. The methods used for channel opening and implantation may vary. But, all of them can be classified as different methods under FUE.

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), and Sapphire FUE Hair Transplant are also offered as hair transplant procedures.

What is Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)?

Follicular Unit Transplant, also known as the strip method, is rather an older technique. During the FUT procedure, the hair is transplanted from the donor area on the sides and back of the scalp to the balding, or receding areas of the scalp. This permanent area is more resistant to balding.

During this procedure, firstly the patient’s scalp is anaesthetised.

Then, the doctor removes a strip of tissue from the donor area.

Strip method requires an extensive medical procedure. Literally, a strip of skin is cut away from the donor area. As a result, the hair transplant patients have to carry the traces of their operation on the back of their head.

Afterwards, the surgeon and medical team cut the strip tissue into many individual follicular units via microscopic dissection techniques.

During the stereo-microscopic dissection of grafts, follicular units are isolated from the donor strip. In this way, the units are neither broken, nor damaged. To maximize growth, the whole of a single unit is kept intact. Intact follicular units provide the most fullness for the hair restoration.

In the meantime, these follicular unit grafts are being prepared, the surgeon opens tiny holes in the scalp. After that, grafts are placed in the recipient site.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method is nowadays preferred over FUT due to the unwanted scars on the donor area.

Download Full Version of Hair Transplant Guide Now!

What is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) uses a similar methodology to FUT except for a very important difference: In FUE, the follicular unit grafts are extracted directly from the donor area with slit method. Basically, FUE is a harvesting method.

It means that the surgeon does not cut out a strip of tissue from the donor area. Instead, the instrument is used for the separation of a follicular unit from the surrounding tissue. Here, surgeon makes a small and circular incision around a follicular unit. Then, this unit is directly extracted by pulling from the scalp, which leaves a small open hole.

This process is repeated by the hair transplant surgeon until an enough number of grafts is harvested. The duration of the process differs according to the condition of the patient, and the number of grafts. It usually takes 6 to 8 hours per operation.

It should be noted that tiny recipient sites are made in the balding area of the scalp before harvesting the grafts. For this procedure, a fine needle-point instrument is used. After that, follicular units are transplanted into the recipient site. In the end, these units will grow into healthily hair producing follicles.

After the FUE operation, it takes 7 to 10 days for donor wounds to heal. These wounds are so tiny. They are approximately 1 mm in size. They leave tiny white scars which are hidden in the hair inside sides and back of the scalp.

As aforementioned, FUT and FUE have essentially the same process of creating recipient sites, and placement of follicular unit grafts. The main difference is that FUE offers better quality and quantity of the necessary graft numbers. You should also remember, in the FUT technique, the operation leaves an unpleasant scar on the donor area.

To have more detailed information about Follicular Unit Extraction, you can visit FUE Hair Transplant page.

What is Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) / Unshaven Hair Transplant?

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation), also known as Unshaved Hair Transplant, is done by a special Choi implanter pen. It is a minimally invasive procedure. Hair transplant candidates with partial baldness are ideal candidates for this type of procedure

The difference DHI method provides is that it allows a hair transplant operation without shaving the hair. Hair transplant patients can go on with their lives without the traces of operation.

In Unshaven Hair Transplant, a different tool, named Choi pen, is used after the regular extraction with slit method. After the grafts are extracted, they are loaded into the Choi pen. Choi pen has mechanically designed in a way that allows to combine the last two stages of hair transplant, channel opening and graft implantation. After the extraction, channel opening and hair transplantation can be done at the same time.

Candidates with traction alopecia, receding hairlines, or partial baldness can have DHI treatment. It usually takes 4 to 8 hours.

The recovery time for DHI hair transplant is 2 to 3 days.

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) has one disadvantage. It only allows up to 2500 grafts to be transplanted per session. Therefore, hair transplant patients may need multiple sessions if the balding part requires more than 2500 grafts.

Some hair transplant surgeons may use hybrid methods by performing both FUE and DHI for different areas of the scalp.

To have more detailed information about Direct Hair Implantation, you can visit our page on DHI Unshaven Hair Transplant.

What is Sapphire FUE Hair Transplant / Percutaneous Technique?

Sapphire Percutaneous is a recent developed hair transplant technique for the FUE method. In this technique, sapphire blades are used to do the operation instead of the steel blades used in standard FUE operations.

In fact, Sapphire FUE (Percutaneous Hair Transplant) is not in itself a technique. It is an innovation in the FUE technique with the attachment of sapphire blades.

Sapphire blades are optimal for minimizing the scab formation, and accelerating the recovery process.

In Sapphire FUE, the patient is first administered with local anesthesia, and then extracted hair follicles are put into the recipient sites with the assistance of a micro motor via micro punches in size of 0,6 mm to 0,8 mm in general.

You should remember that micro openings are very effective for hair transplant, and the best is done via Sapphire blades today.

The sapphire blades come in the sizes of 1,00 mm to 1,5 mm. Their advantage is that more channels can be opened this way, and hair follicles can be placed very close to each other.

Thanks to their material features, sapphire blades are more tolerant to vibration of the micro motors. That is why it minimizes any possible scalp tissue damage, or trauma. Hair follicles put closer together means that your hair restoration density will look more natural.

Overall, Sapphire FUE offers a faster recovery period with the minimum probability of complications resulting from any hair transplant operation.

What Kind of Results can be Expected from a Hair Transplant?

The expected results from a hair transplant can be different for individuals. It usually takes a year for the result of a hair transplant procedure to manifest itself.

New hair growth usually begins in the 2.5 to 3 months after the operation.
In 6 to 8 months, your hair may be restored to a healthy condition where you can in actual comb them.

Over the course of a year, your hair gains thickness, and length. Characteristics of your hair may also change during this period. Together with the original characteristics of your hair, it often makes your hair silkier and less kinky. It starts to take on a wave there, too, depending on the aforementioned individual circumstances.

Realistically speaking, different individuals experience different hair restoration processes. Your hair’s characteristics along with the applicable number of grafts, and the critical intervention of your surgeon affect the overall process.

What are the Alternatives to a Hair Transplant Procedure?

There are various non-surgical and medical alternatives to hair transplant surgery. In some cases, surgeons may want to delay hair transplant surgery and offer alternatives to candidates.

For example, younger men and women may not be ready for hair transplant surgery. It is because you won’t be able to witness the most satisfactory results by the surgery at an early stage in regards to your specific conditions.

The alternatives to hair transplant procedure provides cosmetic improvement on your hair until you are ready for a surgery in the eyes of the surgeon.

Early intervention in the donor area in younger patients will have a negative effect. That is why surgeons usually choose to wait for the completion of hair loss period.

It is important for the surgeon to be able to determine the hair loss pattern of the patient in order not to ruin the donor area.

But, surgeons can advise you in such cases for the alternative treatments.

Medical treatments for hair loss include drugs such as Finasteride, Minoxidil. While Minoxidil is topically applied, Finasteride is taken orally as a pill. According to the medical expert views, these can either be taken separately, or used in conjunction.

There are also short term camouflage solutions. These camouflage solutions can be used to give a fullness outlook. They are either applied to the scalp, or the hair itself. All camouflage products are offered in variety to match the patient’s outlook and the needs.

If you suffer from an aggressive hair loss starting at early ages, hair transplantation may not be an option for you. It is because that you will be losing so much hair by the time you are considered alright for hair transplant, your donor area will not provide the needed number of grafts.

In these cases, you can consult with a surgeon, and choose the most appropriate option for yourself.

What are the Realistic Expectations from a Hair Transplant Procedure?

To reach a realistic, and satisfying hair restoration, there are some points you need to take into account before starting a hair transplant procedure.

It is very important for you firstly to consider each and every step of the hair transplant procedure together with your surgeon. Pre-operative consultation with the surgeon is a must.

Hair transplant candidates usually do their own research by either asking a friend, talking to a specialist in their home country, or searching on Google.
By playing with graft calculators, candidates can only have “a rough idea about the number of grafts” they need for hair restoration.

There are variables for realistic hair transplant surgery results. Patients’ overall surgery results depend on the following factors:

  1. The quality of grafts
  2. The success of growing percentage of the transplanted hair
  3. The appropriateness of extraction performed on the donor area
  4. The type of skin covering the scalp
  5. The hairline design

In essence, considering the factors above as well as your financial conditions, a hair transplant in Turkey will give your hair natural looks. It should be noted that hair transplant is an emotional process, too. A satisfied hair transplant patient will gain self-confidence as well.

Face to Face Consultation

During the face to face consultation, the hair transplant patient will be closely examined by the surgeon. The donor area will also be evaluated to calculate the number of grafts to be used for hair transplant.

After the examination, the doctor should carefully listen to the patient’s expectations after the hair transplant procedure. Then, the patient and the doctor discusses the best medical and cosmetic option that is suitable for the operation.

Next step is the hairline design. As the frontal part of the hair is the most visible one, the hairline has a tremendous effect on how the patient will look. Considering the patient’s expectations again, the surgeon should draw the best looking hairline on the frontal part of the scalp.

After the drawing is done, the patient checks with the help of a mirror. If both parties are happy with the hairline design and treatment details, the preparation can be started for the operation.

Hair Transplant Surgery Preparation

The preparation before hair transplant surgery starts with the blood test. Taken a small amount of blood from the patient, it is tested for any medical issues that may prevent the operation. The blood test takes about 30 minutes.

The second step is the shaving. Unless the chosen method is Unshaven Hair Transplant/DHI (Direct Hair Implantation), the scalp needs to be completely shaved for hair transplant. This process takes about 5 minutes.

The last step before the hair transplant is anaesthesia. Using a chemical sedative, the scalp is completely numbed. There are two options for anaesthesia, the standard and needle-free. The standard anaesthesia is applied through injection. The needle-free anaesthesia is applied with the pressure of air. No injection or needle used in this option but a special device that uses high pressured air to penetrate the skin. Both options take about 15 minutes.

Hair Transplant Procedure

What To Do Before A Hair Transplant Procedure?

Here are the things that you should do in particular intervals before your hair transplant operation:

10 Days Before the Operation

If you are using multivitamin supplements, you should be cautious if they contain Vitamin B and Vitamin E as these vitamins have a potential to cause an increase in bleeding. You should stop taking these vitamins 10 days before the operation.

7 Days Before the Operation

You should stop smoking 7 days prior to hair transplant. Smoking has a serious effect on blood flow as a result of blood vessel blockage. This may lead to slow recovery, wound infection and scarring.

You should stop taking any blood thinner medication (i.e. aspirin) 7 days before the operation.

You should stop taking anti-inflammatory medication (i.e. ibuprofen) 7 days before the operation.

3 Days Before the Operation

You should stop consuming alcohol or any drugs 3 days before the operation. Because these substances may have negative effects on the local anaesthesia.

The Operation Day

Take a shower to ensure a hygienic operation.

Wear a shirt with buttons or a loose T-shirt. After the operation, you will wear your clothes again. It is very important for the newly transplanted grafts on your scalp not to touch anywhere. So you should pick comfortable clothes that can prevent any difficulty while wearing.

Avoid coffee or any products with caffeine in the day of operation. Caffeine may increase bleeding.

Do not wear any perfume or cologne in the day of operation.

How long does a Hair Transplant take?

The length of a hair transplant operation depends on the number of grafts planned to be transplanted and the size of the balding area. For example, if the hair transplant is only planned for the frontal area, it will take shorter.

Average length of a hair transplant is 6 – 8 hours.

A hair transplant candidate can have a better idea about the length of operation after the consultation with a hair transplant surgeon.

What Is the Post-Operative Care For A Hair Transplant Procedure?

The Post Operational Hair Transplant procedure has a great role that is strongly connected to the recovery and final result of the operation. Therefore, a hair transplant patient should strictly follow as she/he is instructed for aftercare by hair transplant surgeon.

For the first few days after the hair transplant, the patient must be informed about:

How To Sleep After Hair Transplant

You should be very cautious while sleeping after hair transplant due to the extra sensitive condition your scalp will be in. Sleeping in a semi-upright position and using one or two pillows for your back is the best way to sleep for the first night after hair transplant.

There are also neck pillows available for hair transplant patient’s use to assist them in their sleep for the first few days of recovery. Thanks to the neck pillow, you can prevent any potential damage to the newly transplanted grafts.

How To Handle Pain After Hair Transplant

You may feel a mild pain after the anaesthesia loses the effect. The pain is described as “quite tolerable” by the most of the hair transplant patients. However, in case of any disturbance, the hair transplant surgeon advises for painkillers suitable in such situations. You should always consult your doctor in any case of medicine use after the operation.

How To Handle Swelling After Hair Transplant

Anti-edema medication is given after the hair transplant to prevent any potential swelling after hair transplant. Most of the time, medication helps very well. However, some patients may still experience mild swelling after 2 – 5 days.

Although swelling is a natural reaction and does no harm, the hair transplant patient can use ice compress to reduce it. In such cases, you should remember how sensitive the donor and recipient areas and never touch these areas with ice compression.

Hair Transplant Costs

How much does a Hair Transplant Cost?

The cost of a hair transplant is dependent on the geographical location. There are various countries that are among the top medical tourism destinations internationally. As of 2020,
some of these countries are Turkey, Thailand, South Korea, Poland, India, and the Ukraine.

The dynamics of hair transplant market varies from region to region. For instance, in the United States and Europe, the cost is determined based on the number of grafts needed for hair transplant. Bigger balding area coverage means more money.

If you are planning to have a hair transplant in Turkey, you should know that most of the hair transplant clinics determine the prices per session. One session includes the maximum number of graft extraction for hair transplant. However, there are deceptive promises like “Up to 7000 Grafts” of which one should be beware.

A good hair transplant surgeon does not focus on the quantity but the quality. So, in a good transplant, only medically and cosmetically suitable number of grafts should be extracted for a natural-looking result.

The prices also vary from region to region. In Europe, a hair transplant operation costs between €15.000 to €20.000 while in the United States it costs between $15.000 to $25.000.

Fortunately, there are much more affordable options in other regions. For instance, hair transplant costs in Turkey are around €1900 to €2500 on average.

That is why Turkey is seen as one of the top medical tourism destinations. About 300 hair transplant providers are active only in Istanbul.

The hair transplant prices are determined according to the labour cost of the country as well as other economic factors. The prices do not reflect quality but the average cost of living in these countries. A talented hair transplant surgeon in Turkey performs a dramatically higher number of patients compared to her/his colleagues in the United States or Europe. Being more experienced and seeing a serious number of different cases with different hair types and physiology. Eventually, they become more capable and innovative in hair restoration.

Payment plans for hair transplant may change according to the treatment plans, packages and services purchased. While some hair transplant providers offer treatment-only options, others may offer packages consisting of treatment, accommodation, VIP transferences and more according to the needs of the patient.
